IN their first league game of the season at Kirkby Lonsdale, Wirral secured a bonus point win – although they had to work hard for the victory.
It was the home team who took the lead in the encounter through a Pickthall penalty but steady pressure from Wirral resulted in a try in the corner from Danny Harvey.
The hosts retook the lead from a kick through and score by Barton – controversially as there was some doubt regarding the grounding.
In the minutes before half-time, prop Matt Brown picked up the ball from a maul and drove over the line with Craig Harvey converting.
Kirkby Lonsdale landed a penalty seconds before half-time to leave the score 12-11 in favour of Wirral.
With the benefit of the breeze in the second-half, Wirral continued to apply pressure.
Jonathan Harris on his debut was denied a try but minutes later forward Tim Hodson, out on the wing, crossed in the corner.
A series of penalties allowed Kirkby Lonsdale back into the game and from a quickly-taken free-kick, wing Pewsey followed up a kick to score.
The match was on a knife-edge until 10 minutes from the end when James Annetts broke through to score with Craig converting to give Wirral a deserved victory.
