CRAIG ROSS and Mike Manley both scored hat-tricks as Caldy scored 16 tries against lowly Manchester at Paton Field in a very one sided game.
Despite losing talismanic fly half Richard Vasey after 12 minutes, Caldy played some superb expansive rugby as Gavin Roberts took over kicking duties and notched 27 points in a comprehensive victory. Caldy’s experimental side showed the squad’s strength in depth with the front row of Cray, Rylance and Parker overpowering their heavier opponents and setting the tone for the performance.
Adam Aigbokhae reached over to score on three minutes and Mark Rylance scored after 11 minutes as Caldy made an electric start to the game. Impressive fly half Scott Redfern kicked a penalty to reduce the deficit to 11 points before Caldy went through the gears and started to play to their structured play. Caldy added another 28 points before the end of the half with tries from Soutar, Ross, Manley (2) and Roberts which left the half time score 42-3.
The second half saw more of the same as Caldy’s superior fitness showed and both Craig Ross and Mike Manley completed their hat-tricks and further tries came from Rowlands (2) Soutar, Woods, Sewell and Smith. Manchester never stopped competing at the breakdown and were unlucky on two occasions when fly half Redfern intercepted.
