Caldy 32-25 Hull

CALDY produced a stirring second half performance to turn around a 19-8 half time deficit in an open game against Hull Ionians in National Two North.

Caldy were first on the scoreboard with a penalty from Vasey in the first minute and Ionians hit straight back when full back Simon Hammersley found space out wide after good work by Ionians’ forwards.

On 11 minutes, man of the match, Josiah Dickinson himself found space out wide and powered over the line to leave the scores 8-5 in Caldy’s favor.

Then came a period of pressure from Hull Ionians as they scored two converted tries through James Rule and Oli Marns and it looked as though Ionians might run away with it.

Gavin Roberts nearly reduced the half time deficit with an excellent run but Hammersley managed to catch him just short of the line.

Ionians got onto the scoreboard first in the second half with a penalty from Ferguson but then it was one way traffic. An excellent backs move saw Dan Rowlands come into the line and feed Craig Ross who scored out wide, Vasey converted.

Vasey notched a penalty and then scored a try under the posts after Jon Sewell found a gap, drew the full back and fed inside to Vasey to score.

On 59 minutes, John Broxson earned Caldy their bonus point with the fourth Caldy try after a quick penalty caught the home side off guard and he touched down on the right wing.

Vasey got the touchline conversion to leave the scores 32-22.

James Ferguson reduced the Caldy lead to seven points, but despite Jack Collister being sin binned, the home side was unable to score another try to tie the game and Caldy took all five points.
