CALDY edged a close game at Paton Field in terrible conditions.

Rugby Lions pushed Caldy to the edge in this National Two North encounter and were unlucky not to come away with more than one point. Richard Vasey kicked a penalty in the 70th minute that proved to be the difference between the two sides on the day.

Caldy took the early lead after through a Richard Vasey penalty and a try from winger Dan Rowlands after a strong break by Craig Ross. Rugby Lions hit back with a penalty of their own to reduce the deficit before Richard Vasey was fed inside to score under the posts and converted his own try. As Caldy pressed for their third try of the half, a Rugby Lions turnover saw them run the ball the length of the field with winger Craig Dowsett scoring the try and Brown converting.

Caldy started the second half strongly with Andrew Soutar finding space out wide from a scrum and sliding over for a well deserved try. Vasey converted the touchline to stretch the Caldy lead to 12 points. Rugby Lions never stop competing and centre Lewis Flood found space to score close to the uprights which Brown then converted. Both sides kicked penalties before Lions got their third try of the day after lock Chris Shipway powered over the line. Brown again converted to give Rugby Lions the elad for the first time in the game. On 70 minutes, Man of the Match Richard Vasey kicked what turned out to be the decisive penalty to leave the scores 28-27 and Caldy defended stoutly for the remainder of the game.
