CALDY’S front-row scored three first-half tries as Caldy earned a bonus point win against a resolute Nuneaton side who could have won a tight game at Paton Field.
Nuneaton scored the first try of the day after only two minutes – and what a try it was as centre Elliott Brown ran in from his own half to score untouched. Jack Jolly missed the conversion.
After five minutes, Caldy hit straight back as Gavin Roberts found space out wide and touched down. Richard Vasey kicked the conversion.
On 13 minutes, Gavin Woods went down the blind side and cut inside the full back to score out wide and Vasey again converted from the touchline. Nuneaton fly-half Jolly landed a penalty to reduce the arrears to 14-8 but Jack Parker stretched the home side’s lead on 23 minutes as he also found space on the blind side to score in a similar way to Woods.
Vasey who had a perfect day with the boot kicked the conversion.
A period of concerted pressure from Nuneaton saw winger Collins come in off his wing to score under the posts and Jolly duly converted.
A good move from Caldy on 35 minutes saw hooker Neil Dowridge cut inside Mike Umaga and power over the line and Vasey converted.
Jolly then booted over another three-pointer to leave Caldy 28-18 up at the interval.
The second-half was far less exciting as both sides showed some excellent defence that saw only three points scored between both sides.
Those points went the way of Nuneaton and Jolly as he kicked another penalty in the 68th minute.
The last 10 minutes were somewhat tense but Caldy managed to hold out and secure their first win in four games.
BIRKENHEAD PARK were in fine form against Lymm in National League 3 on Saturday as they scored seven tries in a rousing display at the Upper Park to earn a 48-15 victory.
Powerful prop Martin O’Keefe led the way with a hat trick of tries as he used his strength to good effect to constantly threaten the Lymm defence.
O’Keefe said: “Shaun Gallagher has been putting me through some extra training to help increase my fitness levels and I felt that this is already paying dividends. Hopefully there will be plenty more tries to follow.”
Coach Gallagher said: “I am pleased that Martin is putting in the extra graft. Lymm found him a real handful and if he can get that bit fitter he will do even more damage.”
Park’s bonus point victory moved them up to fifth position level with Darlington Mowden Park who are the next opponents on Saturday.
