Round-up of every try, tackle and scrum – all the rugby action from teams across Wirral

THE boot of Richard Vasey proved the decisive factor in an enthralling win by 28-25 for Caldy against Fylde.

Both sides came into the game with a record to uphold, with Caldy unbeaten on the road this season and Fylde unbeaten at home for the past 12 months, something had to give.

Caldy started the better side with excellent phase play and were soon 14-0 ahead.

On 11 minutes, an excellent worked move saw Arnold collect the ball from a slick pass from Vasey and race under the posts for the first score of the day which Vasey converted. On 20 minutes, Craig Smithson doubled the lead when he powered over the line after some fantastic pressure by the Caldy forwards. Fylde then sparked into life and scored three tries in quick succession.

The first by McGinnis came on 26 minutes after the Fylde forwards mauled their way to the line and soon after lively centre Alex Hurst benefitted from a misunderstanding at the back to touch down in the corner.

Then on 37 minutes a fine break by the Fylde centre Ward found Mike Waywell who scored in the corner to leave the half time score 19-14.

Caldy got back in the game immediately after half time when the ball was passed out wide to find Kerfoot unmarked and he outpaced the covering defenders to score in the corner.

Vasey missed the conversion. Vasey kicked a drop goal to give Caldy the lead and a penalty which were cancelled out by two Fylde penalties from the impressive substitute Sam Russell.

As the game drew to a conclusion it looked as though the match would end in a stalemate until Fylde conceded a penalty on the half way line.

Vasey did not hesitate in going for goal and got a perfect kick between the uprights to win the game and take the spoils.

A fantastic game for anyone who witnessed it and a great advert for National Two North rugby.
