Caldy won a tense match against Loughborough Students

CALDY produced a stirring second half performance to edge Loughborough Students in a pulsating game.

Loughborough as expected started the game at the higher tempo and were rewarded with a well worked try after only eight minutes.

A cross field kick from George Drake was expertly taken by Geraint Walsh who touched down.

Drake managed the extras from out wide.

Caldy’s defence stood firm, as wave after wave of Loughborough attacks were repelled.

On 31 minutes, Vasey kicked a penalty to narrow the scoreline but Loughborough’s Phil Burgess hit back late in the first half as he brushed off would be tacklers to score under the posts which Drake converted.

In the second half, Caldy sprang into action with Richard Vasey kicking the forwards into good areas of the field. Caldy pressurised the Loughborough line continually and the Caldy forwards exerted their superior power in the scrummage as they drove over the line and Craig Smithson touched down. Drake hit back with a penalty to make the score 10-17.

Caldy again pressurised the Loughborough defence and after several rolling mauls the ball was fed wide to Ben MacPherson who eluded the defence to score Caldy’s second converted try, after Vasey kicked the extras.

With the scores level, Caldy powered down the middle of the pitch to allow Vasey to kick the winning drop goal with two minutes to spare.

Man of the Match was Jack Collister, a powerhouse performance in only his second start.
