Caldy 17-11 Rugby Lions

THE first half was a slightly messy affair with both teams disrupting each other’s play.

Rugby had the lion’s share of the ball in the first half and went in at half time winning 3-6 with Richard Vasey and Joss Andrews kicking the only points.

The home crowd looked worried for a minute as Rugby were awarded another penalty virtually from the kick off.

Andrews decided to aim for the posts but the 40 metre kick fell short and Caldy decided to pull their socks up.

Jake Lion, who had a fantastic game, put Rugby under immense pressure from every kick and it was his steal that set up Neil Kerfoot’s try right in the corner that Vasey impressively converted.

Gaz Roberts came on for Oli Cooper in the second half and made a tremendous break through the centres to set up Paul Arnold for his 13th try of the season.

The Lions counter attacked with some great rugby, pulling in the Caldy forwards before shipping it out to their winger Jeffrey Gregson who took advantage of the overlap, but it was too little too late and the final score was 17-11.

Next weekend the first XV are making the short trip to Waterloo for their last game before the Christmas break.

Matt Holt said: “This weekend was a good result, but the first half left a lot to be desired and the discipline wasn’t at it’s greatest.

“The boys know what they have to do and they’re definitely going to be up for the win this weekend against Waterloo, it’s one of those fixtures that they all look forward to.”

Waterloo are currently sat at the bottom of the table but the rivalry between the two clubs always ensures a great game and they are not to be underestimated. Kick off is 2.15 on Saturday.

The second XV are also away, making the trip to Manchester, while the third team are at home to Leigh if you want to make your way down to Paton Field for the 2.15 kick off.

Also a congratulations to the junior boys section who raised money for Help for Heroes and their own tour by doing their very own 5km Santa Dash before the game last Saturday.

Lee Michael from Body Solutions was the first Santa home, well done boys.
