Birkenhead hit the highs at Penrith

IT was a tough slog for Birkenhead in this National Three North clash but they won deservedly in the end.

Penrith actually led at the halfway stage but wilted in the final quarter as the home pressure paid dividends.

David Blythe grabbed a 15th minute try for Birkenhead from a forward maul but Penrith struck back with a Bill Fell try and a Steve Wood penalty.

The visitors defended stubbornly in the third quarter but Dave Hall levelled the scores with a 62nd minute penalty and struck again three minutes later.

Birkenhead then made sure with a Gavin Scott try from a kick through by Tony Handley on 70 minutes.

Dave Ibbotson was prominent in the home back row and Chris Pugh gave a promising show when he replaced Steve Lowry at scrum-half for the closing stages.
