CALDY moved to the top of the National Two North division on points difference after a storming win against Preston Grasshoppers.
Director of rugby Matt Holt said: “It was a good win, Preston have previously been hard to beat as last year’s results showed, so I was very proud of the boys.”
Caldy scored a total of seven tries on the day and looked impressive in every aspect of the game with all 20 players contributing.
Jon Nugent made it onto the score sheet after only two minutes by crashing over the line for Richard Vasey to convert.
Preston answered back with a drop goal from fly half Zavallis Roebuck but it was the Caldy backs who took the next two tries with both Broxson and Kurfoot scoring out wide.
Preston were last to score before the half time whistle to make it 8-22 to Caldy.
But it was Caldy who were first off the mark in the second half too with number eight Craig Smithson picking it from the back of a five metre scrum to drive it over the line.
This week it was the other Rawling brothers turn to make an interception when Scott ran it under the posts to make it 36-8.
Kurfoot took his second and Gaz Roberts beat his man on the outside to score Caldy’s seventh.
On 68 minutes, James Williams picked up a loose ball on the Preston 22 metre line and raced under the posts to score a converted try for Preston making the final score 50-15.
Caldy’s next game is going to be a tough one at home against old rivals Fylde this Saturday at 3pm which Holt is looking forward to.
He said: “Fylde are a tasty team from past experience and a little rivalry has developed between the two clubs so I think the boys will be working extra hard this week looking forward to the next game.”
Caldy also discovered last week that the club has won the RFU’s Whole Club Seal of Approval, an accolade worked on extensively by club secretary Roger Flashman.
The award will make the club one of the first in England to achieve this award and continues to illustrate how committed Caldy RFC are to providing the club and the community with the best standards of playing and coaching for everyone.
The accreditation will be awarded this Saturday afternoon before the Fylde match.
The Caldy third team are also at home against Wirral, while the second team make the trip over the water to Liverpool St Helens, all kick off at 3pm.
