CALDY produced their most complete display of the season so far to win away against Loughborough’s students, writes Megan Dickinson.

Caldy’s defence laid the foundation for this excellent victory based on the hard work, determination and most importantly teamwork.

The first half kicked off with Caldy facing both a strong wind and a steep incline and produced their best defensive display of the season to lead at half time 7-0.

A solitary try on 27 minutes from Jon Nugent was the difference after good work from Woof and Arnold in the loose and Nugent was eventually driven over the line by his team mates. Richard Vasey notched the conversion. The remainder of the half saw Loughborough camped in the Caldy 22 metre zone but the Caldy defence was outstanding.

The second half was a different story and could not have started any better when within the first minute of the half Andrew Soutar scored in the left hand corner. The conversion was missed to leave the score 12-0. Then the Caldy forwards took over.

The ball was worked into the Loughborough 22 and scrum after scrum was disrupted illegally by the Students who couldn’t handle the strength and referee Rob Sheard awarded a penalty try which Vasey duly converted.

On 58 minutes, Loughborough were awarded a penalty in front of the posts and Pyrgos converted it to make it 19-3.

Vasey immediately struck back for Caldy as he dropped into the pocket and notched a difficult drop goal under pressure. On 64 minutes, Loughborough managed to get a try as they worked the ball well down the left hand side and centre Nathan Lambden powered over the line.

Then came the moment of the day when skipper Shaun Woof intercepted the ball on the opposition’s 10 metre line and raced under the posts to score another try and leave the score at 29-8 and achieve the bonus point. Paul Arnold capped off the day when he took a cheeky tap penalty and dived over the line which Vasey converted.
