Rugby star Austin Healey returns to Park High School

WIRRAL’S own rugby hero Austin Healey was at Park High School in Birkenhead last week to give pupils some expert coaching.

Austin, who starred in the last series of Strictly Come Dancing, was filming for The Big Tackle, to be shown on ITV over six episodes starting on March 15.

Austin, who won 51 England caps, grew up in Claughton and played as a teenager for Birkenhead Park.

During his visit he spoke to students about his journey to success in rugby and questioned them about their commitment to the sport.

PE teacher Peter Silcock said: “We have very positive links with our local primary schools and many of our students go there to teach the junior pupils rugby skills.

“Not only does this help our students to achieve a higher grade in their GCSE in Physical Education, but it also promotes rugby in the local community, which is what Austin is also trying to do.”
