THE DELTA Rangers under-13s football team have been doing their bit for international relations with a trip to Germany at the end of last month.
Rangers, who play in the Wallasey League, went to Rheibach, near Cologne, for the annual Whitsun tournament, which took place from May 25-28.
Playing seven-a-side, the team did Wirral proud, winning four and drawing one of their five games, beating both the hosts and their local rivals along the way, to take the trophy.
There were outstanding performances from all of the squad, with captain Zak Williams’ inspirational displays drawing comparisons of the late Alan Ball from one of the German coaches.
Commanding performances at the back by Lee Wellens, Oli Gregory and Neil Campbell and crucial saves from goalkeeper Josh Devonport meant only two goals were conceded throughout the whole tournament.
And strikes from Lewis James, Adam Rowan, Ryan Greenham, Jordan Haines and Williams kept the goals flowing, while tireless running from birthday-boy Stuart Gemmell and Ollie Taylor made for a great all round team performance.
The team then celebrated in typical English fashion, singing their coach’s praises with a rousing chorus of “Don Greenham’s barmy army”.
Greenham said: “The whole weekend was excellent, with our hosts putting the kids up and arranging for tobogganing, canoeing and swimming plus one or two shandies for the parents.
“A month earlier, we entertained them for a weekend, taking them to the Everton v Man Utd match and the Liverpool trophy room and academy, which they really enjoyed.
“All in all, it was a great cultural exchange and we will be returning next year to defend our trophy.”
Delta Rangers are now looking for a few high quality players to improve their squad for next year. Anyone interested should call Don Greenham on 07941 714185 for details.
