MOTORS moved up to 13th in the table with an emphatic victory at Rivacre Park against a manager-less Boston side low on confidence.

The home side were quick out of the blocks and captain Tom Hannigan had headed wide and Craig Mahon had gone close before Vauxhall took the lead on 12 minutes. David Thompson played a clever through ball to Tom Rutter who turned inside from 18 yards out and hit a well-placed strike into the corner.

Just two minutes later Motors had doubled their advantage. After good work on the right and a cross by new signing Ashley Stott, Rutter was on hand to head home his seventh goal of the season from close range.

Boston should have reduced the deficit on 21 minutes when Spencer Weir-Daley glanced a header wide following Ian Ross’ right-wing cross, but the Pilgrims were soon further behind.

Tricky winger Mahon had time to deliver a deep right-wing cross which was fumbled by stand-in keeper Ricky Drury and Danny Fearnehough was left unmarked to head home from close range.

Goal number four was scored on 33 minutes when Chris Noone ran at the Boston defence before unleashing a fine 25-yard strike which crashed against the crossbar but new signing Stott reacted quickest to the rebound to head home.

Shortly after the interval, Stott should have made it 5-0 but fired wide.

On 72 minutes, the referee awarded a penalty to Motors after Gareth Jellyman was penalised for handball in the area. Louis Barnes stepped up but smashed the resultant spot-kick against the post.

With three minutes left, Stott had another great chance but from Karl Clair’s dangerous low right wing cross he fired straight at Drury from six yards.

Manager Carl Macauley said: “The team is finally starting to take shape after bringing in a couple of new faces and players returning from injury. Ashley Stott has given us a new dimension up front and we now look threatening in the final third of the pitch. Saying that, our defence has kept another clean sheet so we are looking strong in every area.

“I can’t pick a man-of-the-match as every player has put in a shift.

“The work-rate has improved and confidence is high and we are hoping to continue with this run of form next Saturday against Gloucester.”

MOTORS are at home to Gloucester City on Saturday. Kick-off is 3pm.
