Vauxhall Motors head to the FA Cup with their tails up after hard-fought win over Hyde

Vauxhall Motors 3 - Hyde 2

VAUXHALL go into this weekend’s FA Cup glamour tie against Hartlepool with their tails up after on-loan Andy Nicholas came to the rescue with a close range header in the dying seconds to give the home side all three points at Rivacre Park.

Hyde to their credit will feel aggrieved they left empty handed as they perhaps deserved at least a point with a battling performance.

The away side took the lead after just four minutes when striker Shaun Whalley dribbled his way through the Motors defence and calmly chipped the ball over the onrushing Scott Tynan.

Motors hit back just seven minutes later however when a deep Neil Prince corner found defender Andy Nicholas who headed home from six yards out.

Vauxhall keeper Scott Tynan came to Motors’ rescue twice before half-time, first with a point blank save from Dale Johnson and then pulled off another fine save to deny Kevin Holsgrove.

On 62 minutes, Hyde took the lead again when an exposed Motors defence left Holsgrove free on the right wing to cut inside and hit a sweet left foot shot from 12 yards out which left Tynan stranded.

The home side stepped up a gear in the final 20 minutes and were rewarded on 80 minutes when a defence splitting through ball from Lee Dames found Prince on the left who crossed deep for Chris Noone to head home from close range.

In the last minute, it was Prince again as provider with a dangerous ball into the box, which sub Mark King headed against the crossbar and Nicholas was on hand to head home the rebound from four yards out.
