RECENT signing David Mannix was the hero for Vauxhall as he scored the only goal of the game and sent the Motormen into the FA Cup first round for the first time since 2004.

This wasn’t the most memorable of games but all that mattered was the result at the end as Vauxhalls walked away with the £12,500 prize money at stake - and a trip to Hartlepool United.

Newcastle Town to their credit however were more than a match for the home side and any neutral fans watching wouldn’t have known based on this performance that they play their league football two levels below the Motormen.

It was the away side who started the brightest and on 25 minutes Alan Nagington whipped in a good cross from the right wing which found the head of Jordan Johnson but his effort was well saved by Scott Tynan.

Just three minutes later and Johnson turned provider to Nagington but his right footed volley from 12 yards out went inches wide of Tynan’s left post.

Chances were few and far between but the deadlock was eventually broken on 62 minutes when Neil Prince swung in a dangerous corner and midfielder David Mannix was left unmarked to scramble home from three yards out.
