LAST weekend saw the second round of the Wirral Junior Cup.

First Division Fender FC disposed of Second Division table-toppers Brombrough Rake 4-1. Steven Lowrie punished The Rakes’ defence after bagging a hat-trick, with Liam Cairns also steering the ball home for Fender.

AFC Stadium took on Chester League outfit Levers Athletic and exited the competition after cruelly going out to a last minute winner. John Jackson hit Stadium’s goal in the 2-1 heart-breaker.

Birkenhead FC took their good league form into the cup and overturned Claughton Hotel 5-1. Michael Purnell fired in a double with solos for James Atherton, Jamie Edwards, and Ryan Atherton. Claughton went 1-0 up after Dave Bowe hit a superb overhead kick.

Second Division Parkfield BA went in at the interval 3-3 against The Bird, only for their first division opponents to step up a gear in the second half to finish 9-3 victors. Kyle Williams netted four times, backed up by singles for Mick McCann, John Morell, Jason Wilde, Lee Pickles and Jamie Payne. Jason Flaherty smashed home another brace and Ben Charlton added to his tally for the season.

Raby Villa went out courtesy of First Division leaders McGinty’s 3-1. Centre-back Wes Butcher contributed two bullet headers aided by a 30-yard free-kick from Jesse Robinson to progress through to the next round.

FC Wirral came away with a 4-0 win against their Second Division counterparts Neston Legion.

Craig Armitage scored twice, his first an excellent lob from just outside the area. Alex Wilson, Jake Painter completed the scoreline for Wirral.

Bronze Social sealed a 3-0 win at Greenbank. Paul Kirtlan snatched two, aided by a Gary McNaught strike. Redmond Bush was voted man-of-the-match.

In the Vets Division, Shaftesbury Avenue put Springview to the sword after recording a 6-0 win..
