Local football round-up

BOTH Carlsberg West Cheshire First Division games that escaped winter’s watery clutches had a bearing on the title race with Heswall leapfrogging West Kirby into second place thanks to their 2-1 success at Gayton Park.

Heswall took a second-half lead when a sweeping move was finished off by a blistering shot from Danny Cowell. The hosts levelled from the spot through Lee Gibson but their joy was short-lived as two minutes later Cowell had restored Heswall’s advantage.

Leaders Cammell Laird (Mark Head) suffered a shock home reversal to Ellesmere Port, who had Mark Baldwin, Peter McNulty and Peter Charles on target in a 3-1 victory.

Meanwhile, Runcorn Town edged a seven-goal thriller against rivals Helsby in a third round Cheshire Amateur cup tie. Town advanced to the last eight courtesy of goals by Clint Burton (2), Dave Ginever and Steve Latham while Samir Bailey, Idrith Kamora and Gary Lunt struck for Helsby.

Second Division table-toppers Southport Trinity enjoyed a 5-0 home win over West Kirby Reserves as Chris Pardoe, Mark Ellison, Callum Kelly, Ian Morrison and Ian Lewis all found the net while Kevin Frankland and Paul McNeill registered for Mossley Hill Athletic as they inflicted a first league defeat on New Brighton (Craig Griffiths).

Phil Davies posted a valuable double as Marshalls stayed in the promotion picture with a 2-1 success at Maghull Reserves (Baqar Pavas) while Capenhurst Villa (Andy Newland) remain rooted to the bottom following their 2-1 home reversal at the hands of Steve Abbot’s brace for Mallaby.

The League were delighted to be congratulated by the Football Association this week for becoming the first level seven league in the country to achieve the Charter Standard qualification, with thanks going to League Welfare Officer Lew Ensor for all his tremendous work in ensuring the achievement.
