Goole AFC 0
Cammell Laird 1
CAMMELL Laird made it five league wins from six games in a decent performance at Goole AFC on Saturday.
A competent display from Lairds saw them set up with a fairly attacking formation but it was actually the home side who had the first early sorties forwards and subsequent chances, when Goole striker Gavin Allott fluffed his first chance when he gave Richie Whiteside a fairly easy save followed by another spurned opportunity a few minutes later.
Goole are a decent side and were looking to forward themselves at every opportunity, however Lairds were showing a lot of confidence in this game and worked hard to contain the Goole threat, indeed they were showing guile on the counter attack and Shaun Tuck was unlucky not to put Lairds in front just before the break.
In the second half, Lairds again started well and were starting to get some leverage in midfield. Danny Andrews forced the home keeper into a save early in the half after a pursuit of play from Lairds own half.
Goole continued to look for chances with Ashley Worsfold one of a few players who had opportunities for the home side but they were just unable to convert them whilst Lairds remained fairly comfortable in possession.
Time ran out for Goole when, after a great move Lairds, flied forward and the ball fell to Danny Andrews who let rip with a fantastic strike on 85 minutes which sealed the game and gave Lairds their second away win of the season.
Lairds are now up to thirteenth in the table only six points of a play-off spot after a great recent run of form.
There was no time to rest for Alex Hay’s squad though as they were away to Unibond Premier side and local rivals Marine last night in the second round of the Liverpool Senior Cup, then with barely enough time to draw breath they play the reverse fixture to last Saturday’s opponents as they host Goole AFC at Kirklands with a 3pm kick off.
