Oxton record a last gasp win

OXTON Hockey Club men’s first team travelled to newly promoted Crewe trying to get back on track after two successive defeats to Preston and Wakefield.

The game got off to a frantic start and Oxton were soon behind, conceding from two well worked Crewe set pieces. Oxton slowly woke up and towards the end of the first half two goals from Ali McKenzie and Fraser Eaton drew Oxton level.

Oxton's defence continued to be tested in the second half but a defensive mix up handed Crewe the lead.

Crewe's defence had also proved to be susceptible and Oxton again equalised through Dave Bailey and the game was again evenly poised at 3-3.

Both sides expected the next goal to be the winner and as the game drew to a close there was further drama.

Oxton’s concentration lapsed again and soon went behind with another defensive mistake to let Crewe in.

In a rousing last five minutes Oxton pressed a tiring Crewe side and drew level with a fine individual effort from McKenzie.

Then from the re start with seconds remaining centre back Huw Collins broke free, fed McKenzie who drew the keeper and set up youngster Joe Hillyer to tap in the winner for an ecstatic Oxton.
