ON-LOAN defender Tom Aldred netted an 81st minute winner to break the hearts of a battling Vauxhall side who were forced to play with 10 men for over an hour.
Goalscorer Aldred now returns to parent club Carlisle United but managed to score his first goal in senior football. He ventured forward for another set-piece late in the game and, when Vauxhall failed to clear their lines, drove the ball home from close range.
It was a first home league win of the season for Workington against a Motors outfit reduced to 10 men after only half-an-hour. Defender Tom Hannigan was shown the red card after denying Gareth Arnison a clear goal scoring opportunity.
From the subsequent free-kick, a neatly worked routine saw Andy Langford’s shot saved at the foot of the post by Danzelle St Louis-Hamilton. He had earlier saved bravely at Matt Henney’s feet and was then relieved to see a lob from Henney clear his crossbar.
It was not all one-way traffic and home keeper, Tony Caig, kept his side level with two important first half saves to thwart winger Chris Noone and Lee Furlong.
Caig was called upon again in the 51st minute saving well from the lively lone striker Furlong.
Vauxhall: St Louis-Hamilton, Moogan, Dames, Lane, Hannigan, Holden, Wilson (Holmes), Smith (Egerton), Booth (Hine), Furlong, Noone Subs: Wade, Mustafa.
Vauxhall are back on the FA Cup trail on Saturday (3pm ko) at Fleetwood Town.
