IN the Houlihans Birkenhead Sunday Football League Premier Division, Queens Park romped home clear winners suffering only one loss and two draws out of 22 matches. An excellent record. Their goal difference showed their strength as it was 21 goals clear of their nearest rivals in the Premier Division, along with their total points reaching 59 – 17 points clear of runners up, Woodchurch AFC.
On top of a superb run of form in the League, Queens Park also reached the fourth round of the FA Sunday Cup, the Final of the Cheshire FA Sunday Cup – in which they beat Halton Sports of Runcorn 4-1, the Semi-Final of the Wirral District FA Premier Cup – where they lost out to League colleagues Neston Nomads, and the Semi Final of the Houlihan’s Memorial Cup.
Additional winners from the Premier Division were Neston Nomads, who won the Houlihans Memorial Cup for the second time in three years, beating Rock Ferry Social with a convincing 5-1 result.
Neston also came close to winning the Wirral District FA Premier Cup, however their colleagues from the Premier Division, Brow FC, beat Neston 1-0 to take the Honours.
Division Two saw Irby FC achieve the honour of being the ONLY Club in the whole of the League not to be beaten in a League fixture. They finished 10 points clear of runners-up Heswall Windows, with an outstanding goal-difference of 63, with only the Wellington in Division Three letting in fewer goals. On top of this, Irby also reached the Final of the Wirral District FA Amateur Cup, being beaten by a goal in extra-time.
AFC Mississippi and WCS FC fought all the way to the end of the season to decide the winner of Division Two. Mississippi led the table for a large portion of the season, with the challengers changing from WCS to FC Armchair, Wavertree Wanderers and Bebington Legion, and as the season was coming to a close it turned into a two horse race. One that Mississippi won by a draw in the final game against Bromborough FC. However, they also picked up another piece of silverware along the way in the form of the David Tacy Memorial Cup. They beat Division One team Lions FC 2-1 to take home the Cup.
