Brigg Town2
Cammell Laird2
ON A FINAL day that saw many clubs’ season hanging in the balance, Cammell Laird were in the fortuitous position of having already clinched promotion from the UniBond League Division One South.
Predictably, the match at Lincolnshire outfit Brigg Town was more like a friendly than a league match – the Zebras opened the scoring when Tommy Spall laid on Paul Grimes who scored from 12 yards out on four minutes
Laird piled on the pressure and Mark Reed, who has been scoring for fun since signing from Vauxhall Motors, peppered the home goal and got his just desserts with an equaliser after 20 minutes.
The advantage went back to Brigg after the break with a deft lob over Laird’s custodian Paul Whitfiled from Daniel Barrett.
Battling Lairds restored parity after 67 minutes when an Anthony Sheehan cross landed too close to Reed's feet to control but Joe Gibiliru was on hand to thunder the ball into the net. A deluge on the Brigg goal ensued from the Birkenhead men but lady fortune was not on hand to seal a Laird’s win.
Laird now look forward to playing a major part in the Merseyside non-League festival in the UniBond League Premier Division as they line up with Marine, Prescott Cables and Vauxhall Motors next season.
