WITH league champions Retford United failing the FA’s ground grading requirements, it was confirmed that second place will take the automatic promotion slot of the UniBond Division One South.
Lairds took the lead against Sheffield when Ian Cooke before adding another through Mark Reed.
In the second half, Stewart Copnell found himself clear to fire home for Sheffield.
Lairds clinched the points with another strike from Reed, while fans’ favourite Chris Nezianya rounded the keeper to slot home the fourth for the Birkenhead men, who now sit in second place.
With the carrot of derbies against Marine and Prescot Cables next year, the Motormen will be going all out to hold on to their route to the Premier Division.
