Cricketer Alex Hughes making strides with Irby CC and Cheshire

ALEX HUGHES, a year nine pupil at Calday Grange Grammar School, made his first team debut for Irby CC on Saturday, just two weeks after starring for Cheshire at the U14 County Cricket Festival.

Alex, 14, who normally opens the batting for Irby’s second team, got his chance to play for the firsts against Bowden and afterwards commented: “It was a fantastic experience.”

The batsman has scored in excess of 480 runs this season and is currently the top scorer for his club.

Alex was named Player of the Festival at the U14s Championships, held at Wolverhampton, after scoring 64 out of a total of 224-7 to help Cheshire beat Leinster in the final and he was presented with a new cricket bat by the Mayor of Wolverhampton.

Cheshire won three out of their four matches and team coach Paul Heades said: “All of the boys played a part in their fantastic win - we are very proud of them.”
