AN EXCITING game between Sutton and Birkenhead St Mary’s was one of many highlights in the opening fixtures in the LDCC Division Two.
St Mary’s 141-9 declared never looked a large total but 5-30 from Dan Jordan almost won it for the visitors as Sutton reached the score with eight wickets down.
In an equally close game, a stunning 81 not out from Malcolm Swift was not quite enough for Ainsdale as the came three runs short of St Helens’ 160-5 declared in a tight, drawn affair.
Southport Trinity will wonder how they did not defeat Burscough after a fifty from John Morgan helped them reach 202 all out, Burscough’s Brendan Domigan and Phil Unsworth taking four wickets each.
Morgan then produced heroics with the ball taking 5-28 to reduce Burscough to 80-8 but the visitors clung on for an unlikely draw.
Parkfield Liscard crumbled to an easy five wicket defeat against Fleetwood Hesketh, after being dismissed for just 110, Abid Riaz top scoring with 52.
Skelmersdale won by the same margin against Moorfield after bowling the Widnes side out for 141. John Dempsey top scored with 50 but the highlight was 5-42 from Skem’s Waqar Khan.
68 from Wavertree’s opener Josn Birch ensured his side reached 199-7 declared, despite 3-48 from Caldy’s Sunny Gandhi.
It probably should have been a winning total but Caldy dug in for a well deserved draw.
