Neston fall to defeat once again in the ECB Premier Division of the Chapel Press Cheshire County League

NESTON suffered their second successive defeat in a day of consistently high run-scoring as the ECB Premier Division of the Chapel Press Cheshire County League reached its half-way mark.

The Wirral side were outplayed at Didsbury, who rattled up 212-7 before dismissing Neston for 134.

Hyde were the only club in the top nine to win and their third successive victory, by nine wickets after bowling out wooden spoonists Bramhall for 84 (Tom Young 5-40, Rob Woolley 3-35), consolidated their fourth placing and gives the Werneth Low side every chance of staking a claim for the title.

The day’s only other winners were lowly Nantwich, who did their prospects of survival a power of good with an improved performance at Oxton after posting a modest 163. The usually strong Oxton batting collapsed to 146 all out (Chris Davies 46, Lee Dixon 38) against the pace of Jimmy Warrington, 6-43, former New Zealand Test batsman Lou Vincent pulling off five fine slip catches.

Macclesfield moved within 12 points in second place in the table with an 86 runs win at Upton after posting 191-7. Upton’s recent good run ended when they were bowled out for 105 by the pace of Ian Tate 5-47.

Irby lost at home to Poynton by eight wickets, only Jamie Hurworth, 59, showing any form.

Birkenhead Park’s position near the foot of Division Two is growing worse by the week; their fifth defeat in 11 games coming at home to Bredbury St. Mark’s, where 47 from skipper Chris Foran and an accurate 4-40 spell from Carl Ainsworth was not enough to save them.

In the fourth round of the Cheshire Cup, Nantwich inflicted the second defeat in 24 hours on Oxton at Townfield Lane. Former New Zealand player Lou Vincent slammed 138 and Rob Howell 103 in a tally of 302-3, to which Oxton replied with 198, Mark Rowland 67.

Many other ties were postponed because of the World Cup football.
