Poynton take top spot in Division One

POYNTON are the new outright leaders of Division One of the Cheshire Women’s League. With Chester Boughton Hall not in action, Poynton moved 25 points clear with a five wicket win at Bowdon, but Chester still have a game in hand on their rivals.

Despite 31 not out from Sarah Sutcliffe – yet to be dismissed in the league this year – Bowdon were all out for 70, with Gillian Spragg (2-5) and Coral Murphy (2-9) the top bowlers. Sutcliffe starred again with the ball with three wickets for three runs in four overs, but Poynton were guided home by 20 from Heather McHale, who earlier claimed three wicketkeeping dismissals.

Chester are now in the unfamiliar position of third in the table, but they have two games in hand of Appleton, who moved into second place with a six wicket win over Oakmere. This was the second of four meetings in quick succession between the sides and came one day before the teams contest a semi-final, which Oakmere will play under the imaginative name of Oakmere Kats.com! In this league encounter, Emma Barlow made her third successive league score of 60 or above, hitting an unbeaten 67 as her side overhauled Oakmere’s 100 all out for the loss of six wickets inside 21 overs.

The Romiley ground was too wet for play, forcing the abandonment of the division two derby match between Romiley & Dinting and Werneth. There as also no play possible between Hyde and Neston
