CALDY started their 2011/12 National Two North league campaign at Paton Field with a solid victory against a good Nuneaton side who kept in touch through the expert kicking of fly half Lee Chapman.
Caldy scored five tries to one and fully deserved their victory and will consider this a benchmark to develop from throughout the season.
Nuneaton were first on the scoreboard with two penalty kicks from the boot of Chapman and Vasey replied on 22 minutes but Chapman struck straight back to keep the difference at six points. On 37 minutes, new signing Nick King powered over the line for his first try in Caldy colours and shortly after Richard Vasey benefited from some excellent work by Collister to score on the stroke half time to leave the scores 17-9.
After the break, Chapman reduced the deficit with a well taken drop goal but immediately from the kick off Dickinson found space to score a well deserved try. Barnard got Nuneaton’s only try of the day.
Andrew Soutar scored out wide after a good break from Woof and Roberts and Dickinson rounded off the try scoring with his second and Caldy’s fifth try after good work by winger Devaney.
Lee Chapman scored a drop goal to keep Nuneaton in touch but Caldy saw out the last 15 minutes of the game to win and take all five points.
