One hundred up for Wallasey’s Warren Golf Club

A WIRRAL golf club celebrated its centenary year last week - the first private club using a municipal course to reach 100 years on Merseyside.

The Warren Golf Club, on Grove Road, Wallasey, celebrated the landmark in style last week, with a buffet lunch attended by the Mayor of Wirral, the President of the English Golf Union and the President of the Cheshire Golf Union, among others.

The club was founded in 1911 - 15 years after the course itself opened - initially as an 18-hole course.

But with the course divided by a railway line, the decision was taken by George Jellico, Warren's first club president, to revert to the 9-hole course which is in operation today.

Current club captain Kevin McCormack said: “It is a fantastic honour for us to reach this milestone, and a testament to the work put in by everyone associated with the club during that time.

“The club is run by volunteers who give their time to cleaning, improving the footprint of the club with repairs where necessary and to making sure that every person is treated with respect both in the club rooms and out on the course.

“It is a time honoured tradition within golf clubs around Britain, and we are very proud to observe that here.”
