OXTON Hockey Club men’s first team travelled to newly promoted Chester on Saturday, and in an open, exciting game were 5-2 winners.
The victory was inspired by captain Gordon Moore who ran in a man of the match performance which included four goals and set an example in enthusiasm and commitment to his younger team-mates.
Oxton opened the scoring in the first minute when Dave Bailey swept home, the visitor’s bench were predicting an avalanche of goals, only to be silenced when Chester broke away to equalise. I
n an opening ten minutes full of goals and attacking play, within five minutes Oxton were 3-1 up, Moore beating the keeper with two powerful strikes from the edge of the area.
Just before the interval the Oxton skipper completed his hat-trick, latching on to a Ali McKenzie pass after a mazy run down the flank from Sam Cooke. In the second half Oxton continued to press but were again caught on the break and conceded a short corner which Chester readily converted to reduce the deficit.
Oxton put the result beyond doubt when Moore lashed home from a tight angle after Rawlinson’s effort had been blocked.
