THE appointment of former England and Great Britain international, Justin Pidcock, as head coach has given Neston South Wirral a boost prior to their return to North League hockey this Saturday.
Pidcock made his name at Neston as a player during a five season spell with the club, helping them into the National League's top division in 1990. Neston have fallen from grace somewhat since those heady days, but following last season's promotion, there is great anticipation prior to the start of the new season.
Last season's successful skipper, Paul Shepherd, has stepped down with Dutchman, Rogier Van Der Ouderaa, taking over the captaincy. Talented keeper, Richard Lowry, is likely to get his chance in Shepherd's place, whilst defenders Ian Pringle and Steve Elsmoor add depth to the squad after their return from university.
There is plenty of experience in the Neston squad, with Steve Kelso, Mark Donnelly and the evergreen Barry Roberts looking lively in pre-season. Meanwhile, Vice captain, Greg Brooker, will be hoping to recover from injury in time to play in Neston's first home game in October.
On Saturday Neston open their league season with a testing trip to Southport, and will be wary of the attacking threat of the free scoring Robin Benford.
