Cheshire are Northern Counties League leaders

CHESHIRE are Northern Counties League leaders after their second successive win, 11-7. against Northumberland.

Winners against last year’s champions Cumbria in the opening match, Cheshire won four of the six morning singles at Blyth and retained a firm grip on the lead in the afternoon singles session.

In the opening match Mike Bedford from Prestbury won the 18th green and the later big winners included Ashton-on-Mersey’s Kevin Keen, 6&4 and Olly Smith, 4&3. Ashley Sage (Sandiway) 3&2 and Jon Little (Heswall) 4&3 also won to help Cheshire to 7-5 singles win.

After an impressive start to the season – a draw against the powerful Yorkshire side in the opening match - Lancashire totally overwhelmed Durham at Heysham to maintain the title challenge, one point behind Cheshire.

Lancashire led by 4-2 after the morning foursomes and won ten out of the 12 singles in the afternoon for a 14.5 – 3.5 match win. The two counties face their biggest challenge of the season this week, the “Big Six” meeting the northern counties.
