Kate Whitmore is the Cheshire Ladies golf champion

KATE WHITMORE from Mere is the 2010 Cheshire Ladies champion for the second successive year.

Whitmore who is studying for a golf scholarship at Newport, beat Jeanne Bell from Royal Liverpool 5&4 in the final at Delamere.

Both are included in the Cheshire team, announced after the championship, for Northern Counties Match Week at Carlisle starting at the end of June, the qualifying event for the England county championship.

While there are familiar names, Jeanne Bell from Royal Liverpool, is the surprise call-up.

She made her debut in Northern County Match week in the late 1980s, played several times in the following years but made her last appearance in 1994.

She says: “I was surprised to play as well as I did in the championship and get the recall.

“I am absolutely delighted – and surprised.

“I thought I had retired!”

County captain Marjorie Griffiths added: “She really did produce some excellent golf during the week.”

Because of other commitments during the week, Bell and Olivia Briggs from Delamere, also a former county champion, are sharing their place in the team.
