Preparations are well underway for the 67th Caldy Sevens tournament

CALDY Rugby Club is once again gearing itself up for the crowds as last minute preparations are underway this week to prepare the Club’s National Trust grounds at Thurstaston for its 67th Caldy Sevens.

The Tournament never fails to attract strong competition and big crowds to the beautiful Paton Field ground on the shores of the Dee Estuary.

Caldy club secretary Roger Flashman has again been inundated with applications from teams wanting to play at what is one of the most popular Sevens competitions in the country – so much so that several wait in hope on a reserve list for last minute cancellations.

The Sunday Sevens tournament is preceded by the North of England Girls Tens Festival on Saturday.

In just its second year it has already established itself as a firm fixture in the girls’ rugby calendar.

Flashman said: “The Sevens is always a fantastic day out and having the girls event here has really given the whole weekend a boost, adding some tremendous rugby of its own.”

Saturday also sees the National League 2 North fixture between Caldy and Harrogate, postponed due to the weather conditions earlier in the year.

CALDY is one of few clubs that continued to play during the Second World War, with the first Sevens tournament played in April 1944, featuring local teams, the Army and a works team called Rootes which was a factory that made bombers in Liverpool.

The Rootes team won and picked up the very important prize of a handful of eggs and a chum of ale.
