Khedun’s double keeps Neston on top

A BRACE from Dan Khedun helped Neston South Wirral to stay top of the North West League, as they notched a 4-2 win over visitors Wilmslow.

Having been routed 5-2 in the reverse fixture, Neston expected a tough challenge, but were slightly relieved to see the Cheshire side arrive with a much depleted squad. With Wilmslow sitting deep, the Parkgate men tore into their opponents from the first whistle.

Khedun blasted Neston into the lead after 12 minutes, and man of the match, Rob Cookson, added a second shortly after.

A rampant Neston were 3-0 up when Khedun’s deft reverse stick shot beat the keeper.

The league’s leading scorer, Matt Westbrook, powered in a reply from the visitors first shot on goal, and Neston’s nerve was tested when he repeated this feat just before the break.

With last week’s collapse fresh in their minds, Neston dominated the second period, but were guilty of squandering a host of opportunities as their penalty corner routine was found wanting.

Wilmslow worked hard to get back in the game, but they lacked the penetration to test the home defence, and with ten minutes left, Lawrence McNeight ended their hopes when he slotted home from a set piece.

Neston’s Cheshire Plate semi-final at Lymm was postponed for a third time due to snow on Sunday.

This Saturday, Neston face a massive test as they travel to fellow promotion contenders, South Cheshire.
