Oxton in semis

FOLLOWING their summer relocation Oxton Hockey Club mens first team were involved in their first competitive action of the season last weekend.

On Saturday Oxton took on Chester in the Cheshire Cup and Sunday saw the Wirral team again on the road travelling to Didsbury Northern in the national HA Cup.

Oxton dominated for most of the first half against a young Chester side and went into the break 2-0 up thanks to a powerful drag flick from the talented Sion Owen and an opportunists finish from 17-year-old Tom Hughes.

Oxton continued to press and create chances but were limited to their two goals and move into the semi final stage as the game finished 2-1.

The Sunday fixture saw Oxton play several squad players as injuries and unavailability forced their hand.

It took until 15 minutes into the second half for last year’s top goalscorer Ali Mckenzie to finish magnificently after a neat move in the Didsbury half.

Didsbury’s equaliser came with eight minutes remaining. This gave Didsbury the impetus to press for the winner in extra time and this came after a defensive mistake. .
