LIGHT-WELTERWEIGHT star Steve Williams will find himself as chief support on a major televised boxing event on Friday night.
Top of the Sky Sports Friday Fight Night bill sees Scotland’s Barry Morrison challenging Ajose Olusegun for the British light-welterweight title and the undercard is headed up by Wallasey boxer Williams.
Polish prospect Slawomir Ziemlewicz is Williams’ opponent at Liverpool’s Olympia venue in what promises to be a lucrative fight for whoever emerges victorious.
Ziemlewicz boasts a record of 18-2 and in his last bout fought for the IBR Eastern European welterweight title and also can lay claim to being a national champion - he looks certain to provide Williams with a stern test.
Williams’ coach George Schofield said: “Stevie may not have been in the British team at the last Olympics or anything like that but he is a remarkable fighter and a model pro.
“He has had to build his name the hard way, but now he is acting as chief support in a top of the bill title fight live on TV.
“He has had to work hard for his chance, but now he is there he won’t blow it.
“This kid ain’t no easy fight. He sees this as his big chance to find a British promoter and to move on tot he next level - world title level.
“But when Stevie gets the win over him he will be banging on the door instead. I don’t want top rush the kid, but opportunity knocks so we’ll see what happens.
“At the end of the day, if he keeps on winning he keeps selling tickets.”
