Grewel and Goodall have won the Nelson Cup for the second year running

THE Heswall partnership of professional Sandeep Grewal and one-handicap Rachel Goodall, have won the Nelson Cup for the second year in succession.

This year the pair finished with the same 68 return as Jody Addison of Royal Liverpool with Sandiway’s Kate Whitmore, the new Cheshire Ladies champion but retained the trophy on a countback on the last three holes

The Eastham Lodge partnership of Matt Blackhurst and Christine Lloyd won the subsidiary pro-am with nett 65. The subsidiary am-am produced a three-way tie for first place. Son and mother Oliver and Jane Carr of Wirral Ladies, the husband and wife partnerships of Jim and Pat Smith of Caldy and Gibby Khanijay and Zoe Khanijay of Wirral Ladies, all finished on 68.

WALKER Cup hope Charlie Ford, disappointed to finish 14th in last week’s Lytham Trophy, fared better on his return to the area when he won the Pines Trophy at Hillside,

He made the long trip from Leicestershire club Kirby Muxloe for the sole purpose of familiarising himself with the course where the Home Internationals will be played.

But he had to work hard for his victory, a birdie at the penultimate hole in a second round 70 denying Cheshire player Ollie Smith by a shot.

Ford opened with a 74, which included a run of four successive bogeys from the 11th, as he posted a level par total.

Smith, from Ashton-on-Mersey, claimed second place on a card play-off from merit leader Tommy Fleetwood, another Walker Cup squad member from Formby Hall, and Richie Blundell from the host club.
