OUT-of-sorts Lairds journeyed back from Hull after a disappointing reverse against surprise promotion candidates in the UniBond Premier Division.
Ferriby were always in control of the match and gave Lairds little chance of breaking through to create goal scoring opportunities. The only real chance of the opening half went the home side’s way when a fierce Colin Hunter shot rebounded off the upright.
The second half was a similar affair with few chances at either end, the industrious John Corrigan was continually frustrated by Ferriby's solid back line and hopes were up in the Lairds camp of holding out for a deserved point.
Tragedy struck five minutes from time when substitute Simon Bird, on loan from Gainsborough Trinity, put the Yorkshiremen ahead when he raced through to fire past Richard Whiteside in the Lairds goal.
Ferriby tried to make the points safe and it was in injury time that Callum Russell scored his fifth goal in threes games to leave Lairds manager Derek Ward to reflect on a disappointing day.
Lairds were in action last night when they played host to the big boys of the league in Boston United.
On Saturday it is another trip out east for Ward's men when they travel to Ossett Town.
Lairds still have spaces on the official club bus for the mid table clash, call 07545 160908 to book your place or visit www.lairdsfc.com for all information on the club.
