NESTON South Wirral’s inconsistent form continued when they went down 4-3 in a thriller at home to West Derby.
Neston played some attractive hockey in the first half and took the lead when McCurdy’s drag flick flew past the keeper.
But West Derby are a battling side and two breakaways saw them take a 2-1 lead into the interval. The game really took off after the break and Neston’s perseverance was rewarded when McNeight levelled from the penalty spot.
Tempers began to fray and West Derby were reduced to 10 men before McNeight tapped in to put Neston in front.
The home side continued to create chances as West Derby’s discipline went completely, but the visitors sensed a shock when they punished Neston’s wastefulness by equalising with seven minutes left.
Another West Derby player was dismissed late on as the umpire was seemingly mobbed after every decision, but they were to have the last laugh.
A simple penalty corner found its way into the Neston goal in the dying seconds to give them an extraordinary win. Neston’s woes were added to as they picked up several injuries, including skipper McNeight, who will be out for several weeks, and players had to be separated after the final whistle to complete a miserable day for the hosts.
Next weekend, Neston’s squad will be tested to the limit as they entertain Oxton on Saturday, before travelling to Oxford to face Witney in the National Vase on Sunday.
