Trampolining stalwart Ken Todd dies at age of 87

BIRKENHEAD Trampolining Club stalwart Ken Todd died last week at the age of 87.

Todd, from Irby, was actively involved with trampolining for more than 50 years, coached hundreds of children and was the inspiration for three generations of his family to participate in the sport. The multi-talented athlete was active right until the end of his life, coaching students at his club until January 5.

He had a knee replacement on January 7, but was pleased with the result and was looking forward to returning to the sports centre. Unfortunately, he passed away last Thursday.

Todd spent his youth in gymnastics, his working years teaching PE and his retirement teaching trampolining – not to mention refereeing cricket and football.

During his youth, he represented the YMCA International Gymnastic Team under the direction of the famous Charlie Laud. They toured the UK and Scandinavia, giving displays just before the war.

Ken was a member of Upton Cricket Club for many years, playing in all the various teams at one time or other and retired from active playing about 15 years ago.

He was awarded a Wirral Sports Council Award for lifetime service to sport and was also presented with an Award of Merits in 2003 by British Gymnastics.

Cathy Page MBE, manager of Birkenhead Trampolining Club, said: “I am proud to have known Ken, a man who dedicated himself to the service of others, and who was a terrific example to everyone.”
