HOCKEY: Oxton unable to breach Hull

OXTON made the long journey to Hull, hoping to bounce back from recent disappointing results on Saturday.

In the shadows of the KC Stadium, Oxton took the lead midway through the first half through Dave Bailey.

The Wirral side dominated for long periods in the first half but could not put their chances away. Hull started the brighter in the second half and a spirted comeback gave them a 3-1 lead.

Oxton continued to create chances and Sion Owen pulled a goal back for a late consolation.

His side were unlucky to have a goal disallowed in the dying stages, which would have forced a draw.

Oxton will look to bounce back this Saturday, when they take on Yorkshire side Ben Rhydding at home in their last league game before the Christmas break.

Meanwhile, the second team kept their unbeaten run going when they drew 3-3 away against West Derby. Jed Dunbar, Pete Cole and Yuske Wantanbe grabbed the goals, while Darren Brett scored a consolation for the third team as they were defeated 4-1 by Liverpool Sefton II.

Elsewhere, the fifth team won their fourth consecutive game when they defeated Runcorn II 4-2, with Graeme Larkin, Tom Scott, Nick Heald and Tom Hallett grabbing the goals.

Oxton’s ladies first team sit second in their league after a 0-0 draw with Brooklands. Liz Farren, who usually plays as a forward, made some excellent saves in goal to keep the visitors at bay.
