Savi saves day in EDF trophy

CALDY got another glimpse of the future in their second cup clash of the week – this time away to Earlsdon in the EDF Energy National Trophy.

Just as against Birkenhead Park in the Cheshire Cup, the Wirral team took the opportunity to blood academy players, with JJ Dickinson and Andy Barnish both doing well off the bench in the 45-10 victory.

Meanwhile, at the other end of the age scale, Christian Saverimutto, pictured right, hung up his boots following a man-of-the-match performance as an emergency scrum half, following cry-offs and injuries.

Director of rugby Tony Atherton said: “This was a difficult game against a team who were very enthusiastic, so I am pleased we came through so well.

“Our Academy lads were raring to go and Savi showed just what a good player and club man he is by playing so well at scrum half.”

Caldy went 3-0 down thanks to a Chris Scott penalty after five minutes, but struck back when Sam Dickinson scored a try and Gavin Roberts converted.

On 26 minutes, front row forwards Gavin Woods and Ian Critchley combined, with Critchley making the break that put Woods in for the score, Roberts again converting.

Ed Keen got one back for the home team, making it 10-14, but on 40 minutes, Saverimutto broke from a tap penalty and sent in the supporting Shaun Woof, with Roberts’ conversion making it 21-10 at the break.

Earlsdon worked hard to stay in contention for the first 10 minutes of the second half, but after then it was one-way traffic with Neil Dowridge, Sam Dickinson, Jake Lyon and Andy Soutar scoring tries, and Roberts converting twice, to make it 45-10 at the final whistle. Caldy return to National League Three North action next week, with a home game against Leicester Lions, kick-off at 3pm.
