Neston move into top spot in the North West League

NESTON South Wirral moved to the top of the North West League following a 3-1 win over Colwyn Bay.

The Wirral side controlled the game in the first period and deservedly took the lead on 10 minutes, when Steve Kelso fired in from a well-struck penalty corner.

After a spell of sustained pressure, it was no surprise when Lawrence McNeight doubled the lead before the break, as Neston raided forward at will.

Bay came out of the blocks quicker in the second half, and pulled one back from a dubious finish. Neston were then reduced to 10 men when Sean Chappell was sin binned, but this seemed to galvanise the Parkgate men as they began to regain control.

Chris Sullivan also found himself in the bin, but Neston retained their shape and McNeight grabbed a second late on to secure a well earned win.

Elsewhere, the second team picked up their first point following a 3-3 draw at Rossendale, while the third and fourth teams both suffered surprise defeats.

Meanwhile, the ladies first team recorded an excellent 3-1 win at Crewe. This Saturday, the men’s first team will look to maintain their 100 per cent record when they face a tricky trip to South Cheshire.
