Neston South Wirral Hockey Club start with a bang while Oxton are unable to impress

NESTON South Wirral opened their league campaign with a 5-2 win over visitors Formby II.

The Wirral side found themselves two goals down within 20 minutes as the visitors found gaps in the home midfield.

But Neston always held the upper hand territorially and it was no surprise when Cookson and Sullivan both found the net to bring the scores level before the break.

Formby began to dominate in the second half as their opponents wilted in the heat.

Cookson fired in twice to complete his hat-trick, before youngster Sean Chappell grabbed his first league goal for the club with a fine finish.

Neston were back in action on Sunday, when they make the long journey up to Keswick in the National Vase.

In the end Neston had too much quality for their hosts, as McNeight, Khedun, Cookson and Ible got on the scoresheet in a comfortable 4-1 win.

This Saturday, they will look to extend their winning run wheny they face Bebington.

Elsewhere, Oxton lined up with new additions Ali MacKenzie and Paul High, but were missing a host of injured players including captain Nik Heyes when they travelled to Bowdon II.

McKenzie gave them the Wirral side the lead, but Bowdon converted three chances before the break to give them a half time score of 3-1.

Oxton pressed in the second half, but could not convert any further chances. They will entertain Brooklands this coming Saturday.
