Surf Cup glory for West Kirby

WEST Kirby Warriors beat current national champions Team Astbury in the latest round of the North West Windsurfing Cup, held at West Kirby Marine Lake.

The T15 club won all five fleets in a convincing victory that took place in near perfect conditions. Spread over a total of five fleets of different sails sizes, the competition covers ages seven to 15, with the six best sailor’s results from each team counting towards the team result.

With a strong breeze, the West Kirby Warrior sailors soon demonstrated their skills and set the trend for the day, winning all fleets in the first of the four races of the day. But it was not only the more experienced sailors who should get all the glory, the day was made all the more satisfying by the strong showing made by some of the new club members who sailed their hearts out in pursuit of the team victory.

The Regional Cup is decided over four events held around the North West. West Kirby Warriors, with victories in the first two events, go into the third event of the series in a strong position.

But the final result is still far from certain. The next two events are taking place in low wind venues, where the racing know-how of Team Astbury and Manley Mere Katz may yet triumph over the undeniable windsurfing skills of the West Kirby Warriors.
