Medals for Wirral duo

EIGHTEEN-year-old Wallasey athletics star Alex Russell won the senior girls long jump in 5.78 at English Schools Athletics Championships in Newcastle.

Andrew Burgess, 18, from Pensby, took silver in the senior boys long jump, with a leap of 6.91.

Both were looking for much better distances but the weather was not in their favour.

Shown live on Sky, the event – in its 78th year – was held at Gateshead attracting more than 1000 athletes .
