Caldy one step away from Twickenham

CALDY are just one step away from a Twickenham final in the EDF Energy Intermediate Cup after a hard-earned victory at Newton Abbott.

Caldy controlled the game for much of the time through their forwards and had it well won before the home side produced a late scoring burst.

Marcus Coast gained an early Caldy try, converted by Simon Mason, who went on to add a penalty before the break.

Gareth Bansor was next to touch down in the third quarter and Masons trusty boot sent over the conversion and then a second penalty.

It was all over for the home side when Matt Holt collected a cross kick by Mason for a third visiting try.

Caldy then took their foot of the pedal and sent on all their replacements, Matt Leeming, Jack Parker, Matt Green and Carl Porschke.

Suddenly, Newton Abbott found new heart and ran in three quick tries plus a conversion.

Caldy go into the hat for the semi-final draw along with Broughton Park, who surprisingly beat Kendal, Mounts Bay and Dunstablians and Haywards Heath, whose quarter-final was postponed.
