Goole nightmare

CAMMELL Laird’s family day on Saturday was a resounding success as nearly twice the season’s average number of people turned up at Kirklands.

Unfortunately, the 296 spectators saw an injury-hit Lairds experience a rare Unibond First Division defeat, as they lost 3-2 to Goole, secured with a goal in the dying seconds.

The Vikings took the lead when Duncan Bray tapped in a parried save from goalkeeper Craig Bryan.

It was the Birkenhead men, though, who had the better of the first half, with Aaron Rey heading wide, goalmouth scrambles and a penalty claim waved away, and they managed to draw level when new boy Chris Adamson put Aaron Rey through to slot home.

Ronnie Morgan then gave Lairds a second half lead after 18-year-old Kirk Mustoe was introduced for his Kirklands debut.

But Goole pulled level five minutes later, through skipper James McDaid.

The hosts then had a goal disallowed before Goole took all three points, Brad Hill scoring near the end.

Lairds will have been hoping to jump straight back into their promotion push against Skelmersdale United last night.
